Financial insights
The five ideas behind every number these calculators produce.
- EMI
- The fixed amount you pay each month. It covers the interest charged that month first, and what remains reduces the balance you owe.
- Interest
- What the lender charges for the money you borrowed. On a reducing-balance loan it is calculated on the balance still outstanding, so it falls as you repay.
- Prepayment
- Any amount paid above your EMI. It goes straight against the balance, which removes the interest that balance would have accrued.
- Down payment
- The part of a purchase you pay from your own funds. Whatever you put down is not borrowed, so it carries no interest at all.
- Loan tenure
- How long the loan runs. A longer tenure lowers each instalment but leaves the balance outstanding for longer, which raises the total interest.
EMI calculator questions, answered
What is an EMI calculator?
An EMI calculator works out the fixed monthly instalment on a loan from three numbers: the amount borrowed, the interest rate and the tenure. It also shows how much of your repayment is interest rather than principal, which is usually the part people underestimate.
How is EMI calculated?
On a reducing-balance loan the formula is EMI = P x r x (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (the annual rate divided by 12 and by 100) and n is the number of monthly instalments. These calculators build the full month-by-month schedule rather than stopping at the formula, so the totals account for the slightly smaller final instalment.
Which EMI calculator should I use?
Use the one that matches what you are financing: home loan, car, bike or personal loan. They share the same maths but carry sensible rate and tenure ranges for each, and the vehicle calculators add down-payment comparisons. For an existing loan, the prepayment calculator shows what paying extra would save.
Is this EMI calculator free to use?
Yes. Every calculator is free, with no registration and no limit on how many times you use it. All the arithmetic runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent anywhere or stored.
Will my EMI be exactly what this calculator shows?
It will be very close, but lenders differ in how they round instalments, when interest starts accruing and whether fees such as processing charges are added to the loan. Treat the figure as an accurate estimate for planning rather than as a quote.
Does a longer tenure reduce my EMI?
Yes, but it raises the total interest. A longer tenure spreads the same principal across more instalments, so each one is smaller, while the balance stays outstanding for longer and accrues more interest overall. Every calculator here has a "What if?" panel that shows both effects side by side.
